 This adapter reduces a 18mm female connection to be a 14mm female connection making the formerly 18mm size joint now into a 14mm joint so it is compatible with 14mm male bangers or bowls. 
14mm male bangers and bowls are by far the most popular on the market, we always recommend anyone who has an 18mm pipe joint to consider using a reduction adapter so they may have a pick at the plethora of banger options which exist in the 14mm size.
