Reclaim Catcher and Dab Rigs Cracking? How Borosilicate Differs From Quartz
Reclaim Catcher and Dab Rigs Cracking? How Borosilicate Differs From Quartz
When it comes to dabbing equipment, not all glass is built with the same materials. A dab rig, reclaim catcher, quartz banger, terp slurper, and glass attachment may all look like they are constructed from the same type of glass, but that is surely not the case. There are two main types of glass used when building dabbing equipment: borosilicate and Quartz. These two different materials behave differently in particular when exposed to heat.

What Is Borosilicate Glass?
Borosilicate glass is a type of glass made with boron trioxide and silica. It is stronger and more heat-resistant than ordinary glass, which is why it is commonly used for laboratory glassware, kitchen glass, dab rigs, water pipes, and glass accessories.
Borosilicate is commonly used for:
- Dab rigs
- Water pipes
- Reclaim catchers
- Dropdown adapters
- Ash catchers
- Glass adapters
- Carb caps
Borosilicate is popular because it is durable and reasonably resistant to temperature change. It also has a lower melting point, which makes it easier for glassblowers to work with while also being cheaper than Quartz glass.
However, borosilicate, just like quartz, is still glass. It can crack from impact, poor handling, pressure, or thermal shock.
What Is Quartz Glass?
Quartz glass used in dabbing equipment is a significantly more heat-tolerant material than borosilicate glass. Quartz is commonly used for the parts of a dab setup that are exposed to direct heat.
Quartz is commonly used for:
- Quartz bangers
- Quartz dab nails
- Quartz inserts
- Quartz pearls and pillars
Quartz is preferred for bangers because it can withstand extremely high temperatures, hold heat well, and provide clean flavor. It is also more durable because it can withstand repeated heating and cooling cycles.
One of the most common customer questions is, "Why did my reclaim catcher or dab rig crack?"
The answer comes down to the difference between borosilicate glass and quartz. As mentioned earlier, Quartz is made to handle direct high heat. Borosilicate glass is heat-resistant, but it is not meant to be torched directly or exposed to extreme thermal shock.
Why Do Reclaim Catchers and Dab Rigs Crack?
Reclaim catchers are especially vulnerable to cracking for several reasons, particularly under certain circumstances. The 2 main culprits that cause a reclaim catcher to crack are accidental direct contact of the torch flame and extreme heat transference, like when utilizing a titanium dab nail.
A reclaim catcher may crack because of:
1. Direct Torch Contact
The most common cause is accidentally heating the reclaim catcher while torching the banger. Even a few seconds of direct flame on borosilicate glass can create a hot spot. When one small area heats faster than the rest of the piece, the glass expands unevenly and can crack. This is called thermal stress.
It is crucial to use a dab torch that has a fine-tip flame. Dab torches that have a precision tip flame help prevent the flame from accidentally touching unintended parts of the dabbing setup. Dab torches like the Blazer Big Buddy excel at precision heating.
2. Heat Transfer From a Titanium Dab Nail
Even when the flame does not directly touch the reclaim catcher, heat can travel from the titanium nail into the joint of the reclaim catcher or dab rig. Titanium is known for its heating properties; it heats quickly, and the heat spreads across the entirety of the nail, even down to the joint. As great as a titanium nail can be for evenly heated and high-temp dabs, it also has a tradeoff.
We never recommend connecting a titanium dab nail, particularly a full-body titanium nail (vs. a hybrid titanium nail), directly to a reclaim catcher or dab rig. This is because the joint of the titanium dab nail can reach such high temperatures that it will heat up and expand the joint of the dab rig or reclaim catcher. Whether in one fell swoop or over time, this repeated heating and cooling can weaken the joint and cause it to crack.
We therefore always recommend utilizing a silicone reclaim catcher whenever dabbing with a titanium dab nail.
Some other, less common reasons a reclaim catcher can break are as follows:
3. Reclaim Buildup
Thick reclaim buildup within the reclaim catcher can heat up quickly from moderate heat and create a hotspot. As that reclaim buildup heats, it can create an uneven temperature zone inside the catcher, expanding that portion of glass and causing the reclaim catcher to crack. Over time, such buildup can contribute to stress, especially near narrow tubes, joints, and welded sections.
Keeping the reclaim catcher clean helps reduce strain on the glass while also maintaining a better airflow, which helps prevent additional reclaim buildup and wasted dabs.
4. Sudden Temperature Changes
A hot/warm reclaim catcher should never be rinsed with cold water or placed into an extremely cold environment. A sudden temperature swing can shock the glass and cause cracking. Borosilicate is more resistant to thermal shock than standard glass, but it is not immune.
5. Tipping, Dropping, Improper Balance
Obviously dropping glass will cause it to break, especially when it falls onto a hard surface. With reclaim catchers, this issue happens somewhat more often due to the change of the balancing point of the dab rig, especially with mini dab rigs. This is why we recommend turning the reclaim catcher inwards so that its body touches the body of the dab rig. This adjustment will decrease tipping.
Once the reclaim catcher is turned inward, it is still recommended to have the banger pointed away from the dab rig for an ideal line of sight. Refer to this blog to understand proper reclaim catcher placement. https://quartzbanger.com/blog/proper-reclaim-catcher-placement-for-sturdiness/
The Short Answer: Quartz Handles Heat Better Than Borosilicate
Most dab rigs and reclaim catchers are made from borosilicate glass. Most bangers, nails, terp slurpers, and buckets are made from quartz.
That is intentional.
Quartz is used for the part of your setup that gets heated directly with a torch or coil. Borosilicate is used for the water pipe, rig body, and attachments that are meant to support airflow, filtration, and reclaim collection.
A quartz banger can handle repeated heating and cooling much better than a borosilicate reclaim catcher or dab rig. That does not mean quartz is impossible to damage; this material can still experience thermal shock, but it is much more durable when dealing with direct heat.
Borosilicate glass can handle warm vapor, hot water, and moderate temperature changes better than standard glass. However, it can still crack when exposed to direct flame, sudden temperature swings, or stress around the glass joint.

Quartz is the heating surface. Borosilicate is the support system.
Your banger is made to get hot. Your reclaim catcher and dab rig are not.
Why Quartz is Better for Direct Heat
Quartz is the preferred material for bangers because it performs better under intense heat. When you heat a quartz banger, it can absorb and retain heat long enough to vaporize concentrates efficiently.
Quartz is also popular because it helps preserve flavor. Compared to lower-quality materials, quartz provides a cleaner-tasting dab when properly maintained.
That said, quartz can still be damaged. Overheating, dropping, poor manufacturing, and aggressive cleaning can all shorten the life of a quartz banger.
Common quartz damage includes:
- Chazzing
- Cloudiness
- Cracks
- Weak joints
- Devitrification
- Surface staining
- Broken welds or arms on terp slurpers
Quartz is stronger against heat than borosilicate, but it is not indestructible.
How to Prevent Your Reclaim Catcher From Cracking
A reclaim catcher is one of the most useful dab rig accessories because it keeps reclaim out of your rig and makes cleaning easier and saves taht excess reclaim which can still be dabbed. To make it last longer, use it correctly.
Keep the Torch Flame Away From the Glass
When heating your quartz banger, aim the torch carefully. The flame should hit the quartz bucket, not the reclaim catcher, joint, or dab rig.
If your setup is too compact and the flame is close to the glass, consider using a longer banger, dropdown, or different rig configuration.
Let Glass Cool Before Cleaning
Never clean a hot reclaim catcher immediately with cold water or cold alcohol. Let it cool naturally first.
Never Pull The Reclaim Catcher From a Rig
Twist the reclaim catcher slowly at first to loosen any stuck reclaim to prevent the joint from snapping. It is best to remove the reclaim catcher from the rig while it is still warm. Reclaim when cooled can act like glue or cement, apply to much force when trying to remove the reclaim catcher and the joint will snap.
A safe cleaning routine is:
- Finish your session.
- Allow the reclaim catcher to cool but still remain warm.
- Remove it carefully from the rig.
- Wait for the reclaim catcher to reach room temperature
- Clean with the appropriate solution.
- Rinse with room-temperature or warm water.
- Let it dry before reuse.
Clean Reclaim Buildup Regularly
Do not let reclaim build up excessively. Heavy reclaim can restrict airflow, add weight, and make cleaning harder.
Regular cleaning protects the glass and keeps the rig performing better.
Is a Cracked Reclaim Catcher Safe to Use?
A cracked reclaim catcher should usually be replaced. Even a small crack can spread with heat, pressure, or cleaning. A cracked joint is especially risky because it supports the weight of the banger.
Using cracked glass can lead to:
- Poor airflow
- Leaks
- Further breakage
- Injury from broken glass
- Damage to the rig or banger
If the crack is near the joint, base, chamber, or reclaim jar connection, replacement is the safest option.
Is a Cracked Dab Rig Safe to Use?
A cracked dab rig is also risky. Some small cosmetic cracks may not immediately affect function, but glass damage tends to get worse over time.
A cracked rig should not be used if:
- The crack is near the joint
- The crack is near the base
- The rig leaks water
- The glass feels unstable
- The crack grows after use
- The rig has sharp edges
- The piece has been exposed to direct torch heat
When in doubt, replace the damaged piece. A dab rig is not worth risking injury or damage to other accessories.
The Main Takeaway
Borosilicate and quartz are both important materials in dabbing equipment, but they are used for different reasons.
Quartz is made for high heat. Borosilicate is made for structure, airflow, water filtration, and accessory support.
Your quartz banger can handle direct torching because that is what it is designed for. Your borosilicate reclaim catcher and dab rig are not designed to be heated directly.
To prevent cracking:
- Keep the torch flame on the quartz only
- Let glass cool before cleaning
- Use the correct joint size and angle
- Avoid forcing attachments
- Keep reclaim buildup under control
- Use a stable rig setup
- Replace cracked glass instead of continuing to use it
A properly matched dab rig, quartz banger, and reclaim catcher can make your setup cleaner, smoother, and easier to maintain. Understanding the difference between borosilicate and quartz helps you protect your glass, improve performance, and get the most out of your dabbing equipment.
FAQ: Borosilicate, Quartz, Dab Rigs, and Reclaim Catchers
