The Benefits of Silicone Reclaim Catchers For Titanium Dab Nails

Why you should consider a silicone reclaim catcher when dabbing with a titanium dab nail

We have spoken extensively about the benefits of reclaim catchers. Reclaim catchers help capture excess reclaim inside of them, which can be used to dab at a later time. Reclaim may not be as potent or as tasty as fresh dabs, but it still does have some cannabinoids and terpenes left, which can be consumed and effective for a dabbing session. 

The next great benefit of reclaim catchers is keeping your dab rig clean. By preventing the reclaim from sliding down into your dab rig, the reclaim catcher first and foremost keeps the percolators of the dab rig clean. Keeping percolators clean ensures that the airflow and filtration of the dab rig work properly. 

Once the least bit of reclaim attaches to a percolator, more reclaim is sure to follow. This results in clogs that prevent the percolator filtration system from working properly. Those small slits in the downstem, like with an inline percolator, cause the vapor to be divided up into many small bubbles. The small bubbles allow for the vapor to be filtered better than if it were one big vapor bubble. In addition, these smaller bubbles make the draw that much smoother as opposed to big bubbles, which would require my inhalation strength and be more violent instead of smooth. 

Then comes the cleaning component of reclaim catchers. Preventing reclaim from entering the dab rig means the water inside the dab rig will last longer and less reclaim will stick to the sides of the dab rig, requiring cleaning less often. This means your dab rig will be ready to go whenever you want, instead of needing to pause for a cleaning break when you need to use it. 

Then reclaim catchers offer several other benefits beyond the cleaning and reclaim collecting components. Reclaim catchers can be used as adapters. They can be used to transform the dab rig from being compatible with only a female banger to being compatible with a male banger. It can transform the dab rig from only being compatible with 45-degree bangers to being compatible with 90-degree bangers. It can also transform the dab rig from being compatible with one size of banger to another size, like transforming a 10mm joint to a 14mm compatible joint.

Titanium dab nails are great, but as with everything in life, there are no solutions, only trade-offs. So what is the trade-off with titanium dab nails? 

One of the strengths of a titanium dab nail is also its weakness. Titanium nails heat up quickly and hold heat well, which can damage your dab rig. Once a titanium dab nail is heated up, the entire body of the dab nail can reach a similar temperature to that of the area that the dab torch flame was in direct contact with. 

This phenomenon means even the point furthest away from where the torch is touching can reach a similar temperature. Now that may sound awesome for how powerful a titanium dab nail is; however, there is a downside. 

When the dab rig joint of a titanium dab nail reaches a certain temperature, it is liable to break the dab rig joint of a dab rig or bong. The issue is because bongs or dab rigs are typically made of borosilicate glass. Borosilicate glass is not designed to withstand such high temperatures. So if the dab nail reaches temperatures above 400 degrees, it can cause the glass joint to crack. 

Whether it's a borosilicate glass dab rig joint or borosilicate glass reclaim catcher, they are both prone to cracking when used with a titanium dab nail. 

There is a way to avoid these issues. Silicone reclaim catchers have the exact opposite heating properties to that of titanium; silicone has very low heat absorption and heat transference. In addition, silicone, especially medical-grade silicone, can withstand the heat without cracking or breaking in any way. Attaching a silicone reclaim catcher to the dab rig and then placing the titanium nail into the silicone reclaim catcher will have multiple benefits. First, you have the obvious benefits of a reclaim catcher, with saving unused dabs to be dabbed later and keeping the dab rig clean. More importantly than keeping the dab rig clean, a silicone reclaim catcher will prevent the dab rig joint from overheating and cracking. 

If you dab with a titanium dab nail and aren't already using a silicone reclaim catcher, you are quite literally playing with fire. 

Now silicone reclaim catchers are the perfect solution for titanium nails; however, there is one downside. Silicone reclaim catchers to date are only compatible with 90-degree dab rigs when pairing with a titanium dab nail. 

This is partly because when pairing a silicone reclaim catcher, which may be 45-degree angled, the weight of the dab nail will cause the reclaim catcher to bend, and the dish will not be completely flat. The same scenario is also the case with the silicone reclaim catchers with the 90-degree angle arm. 

Once a titanium dab nail dish is not perfectly flat, the dab will concentrate on the lower portion of the dish, whichever direction it's tilting, and prevent the dab from being evenly heated and vaporized.
